The 2024 hurricane season is upon us, with forecasters predicting a "frenzy of tropical activity." Here at Creekside, we want to ensure our Houston neighbors are prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws our way.
What's the Forecast?
AccuWeather predicts a busy season with:
- 20-25 named storms
- 8-12 hurricanes
- 4-7 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher)
- 4-6 direct U.S. impacts
The Texas coast, including Houston, is at an increased risk for a direct hit.
Why the Uptick?
Several factors contribute to this active season:
- Warm Ocean Temperatures: Warmer water fuels hurricanes. This year, ocean temperatures are higher than usual, creating a breeding ground for storms to form.
- La Niña Watch: A La Niña weather pattern is expected to develop, bringing calmer winds which allow storms to linger and gain strength.
- African Wave Action: A strong African jet stream is predicted, potentially leading to robust storm systems forming off the coast of Africa (where 80% of major hurricanes originate).
- Bermuda-Azores High: This high-pressure system might shift south, steering storms directly into the Caribbean and ultimately, the Gulf of Mexico.
