🧠 What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for:

People 65 and older

Certain younger individuals with disabilities

People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS

📦 The Four Parts of Medicare

Part

What It Covers

Notes

Part A

Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Usually free if you paid Medicare taxes.

Part B

Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment. You pay a monthly premium.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

Offered by private insurers. Combines Part A & B, often includes Part D, and may offer extra benefits like vision or dental.

Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps cover the cost of medications. Also offered by private insurers.

💳 Costs to Expect

Part A: Usually free, but there may be deductibles and coinsurance.

Part B: Monthly premium (standard amount in 2025 is around $174.70), plus deductible and 20% coinsurance.

Part C & D: Varies by plan and provider.

🗓️ When to Enroll

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): Starts 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after.

General Enrollment Period: Jan 1 – Mar 31 each year (if you missed IEP).

Open Enrollment: Oct 15 – Dec 7 each year (to change plans).
