Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7. It is the annual window to review your coverage and make changes for the coming year, and it is easy to let it pass without a second look.

Plans change from year to year. Premiums, prescription drug coverage, and provider networks can all shift, which means the plan that fit well this year may not fit as well next year.

Medicare also connects to the rest of your financial picture more than many people realize.

Premiums for higher-income beneficiaries are based on income reported two years earlier, so decisions like a Roth conversion or the sale of an appreciated asset can show up in your Medicare costs down the road. That's another reason healthcare belongs inside the retirement plan rather than beside it.

A strong investment return can tell you that some decisions worked very well. But it doesn’t necessarily tell you whether your portfolio is well diversified, appropriately balanced for risk, tax efficient or prepared for the transition to retirement.

For experienced DIY investors, those less visible considerations can become increasingly important as wealth grows and the margin for error gets smaller.

Our latest article looks beyond performance to explore the risks, taxes, rebalancing decisions, withdrawal strategies and investor behaviors that can quietly affect long-term results.

Read: What DIY Investing Really Costs You:

DIY investing can save advisory fees, but risk, taxes, diversification, rebalancing and investor behavior can create costs that are easy to overlook.

Most people come to a financial advisor with a question. When can I retire? Are we saving enough? What should we do with this inheritance?

Those questions matter, but they rarely stand alone. The answer to one usually depends on several others that have not been asked yet, about taxes, cash flow, estate plans, insurance, or what the next decade actually looks like for your family.

That is why every New Capital Management client receives a financial plan from the start of the relationship, guided by a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional. The plan answers the first question in context and brings the next ones into view.

For decades, the objective was straightforward: save, invest, and let time do its work. Retirement reverses that. The portfolio you spent a career building now has to become a paycheck, and many people find the shift harder emotionally than they expected.

The practical questions arrive all at once. Which accounts to draw from first, when to claim Social Security, how withdrawals affect your tax bracket, and how much flexibility to keep for the years you cannot yet picture. None of these is a one-time decision, and each one changes the math on the others.

A retirement income strategy connects them, so that each year's choices support the plan rather than pull against it.

Most families with significant wealth have thought carefully about the documents: wills, trusts, and beneficiary designations. Fewer have thought as carefully about the people who will one day inherit what those documents describe.

Transferring assets is a legal and tax exercise.

Transferring the ability to steward them is something else, and it tends to take years rather than a single signing appointment. It involves financial education for each generation, clear expectations about how decisions get made, and a shared understanding of what the wealth is meant to do.

Our family wealth work brings those pieces together, from trust and gift administration to estate and tax planning, family governance, and philanthropy, so that a family's values carry forward alongside its assets.

The 2027–2028 FAFSA opens on October 1. For families with a student heading to college next fall, it is the first formal step in the financial aid process, and one that some higher-income households skip on the assumption that they will not qualify.

That assumption is worth checking. The FAFSA is required for federal student loans regardless of income, and many colleges use it when awarding their own aid, sometimes including merit-based awards. The form also draws on 2025 tax information, which means many of the decisions that shape it were made well before anyone opened the application.

Education funding tends to work better as part of the larger plan than as a standalone project each fall. How college gets paid for touches cash flow, taxes, retirement savings, and often the plans grandparents have for helping out.

There has never been a better time to manage your own investments. But managing a portfolio and advising yourself across your entire financial life are two very different things.

As wealth grows and life becomes more complex, the decisions extend well beyond investments to retirement, taxes, estate planning, family, giving and legacy. And sometimes the real cost of doing everything yourself isn’t measured in dollars at all.

In our latest article, we explore a different question for experienced DIY investors: It’s not whether you can do it yourself. It’s whether you still should.

Read: The Hidden Cost of Doing It Yourself:

DIY investing is easier than ever. But managing investments is not the same as advising yourself across retirement, taxes, estate planning and family decisions.

Here is a pattern we see often. Someone has built real wealth, works with an advisor on the bulk of it, and has one large account sitting entirely outside that relationship: the employer 401(k). It is frequently among the largest holdings a person owns, and it is often the one running on an allocation chosen years ago and never revisited.

The plan usually will not let an outside advisor take custody of it, and that is fine. It does not need to move. What it needs is to stop being managed in a vacuum, invested as though the rest of your portfolio does not exist.

Our 401(k) overlay service brings that account into the same strategy as everything else. We look at the specific funds your plan offers, set an allocation that fits alongside the rest of what you hold, and keep it aligned as markets and your life change. The account stays where it is. It just starts working with the plan instead of beside it.

In a blended family, the word family carries more freight than most planning tools account for. There are children from before and sometimes children from after. Some obligations predate the marriage. And there is a quiet, genuinely hard question beneath much of it: how do you take care of a current spouse and still make sure your own children are provided for?

Standard advice tends to skip past this, because the honest answers are specific to your family and occasionally uncomfortable. What feels fair and what is equal are not the same thing, and the default beneficiary designations sitting on your accounts right now may not say what you think they say.

We help blended families work through these decisions on purpose rather than by default, so the plan reflects the actual shape of your family rather than a template built for someone else. Done with care, it can spare the people you love a great deal of confusion at the worst possible time.
