I’m living proof!!! I have over 200K worth of debt which is primarily from my student loans and mortgage (installment loans). I’m not saying that I am proud of my debt, and that you shouldn’t pay yours down, but what I am saying is that the key factors to having good credit as I have always expressed is credit utilization (keep under 30%), credit history and payment history (payments that are made ON TIME)!!!

*While paying off car off felt rewarding, I noticed that my score dropped 17 points (843 to 826) a few days later. So I know you are thinking, why would you score drop after paying off debt?!?!?

*Although, it is important to pay off debt, credit scoring is based on a number of factors:

1. Payment History
2. Credit Utilization
3. Length Of Credit History
4. Mix Of Credit
5. New Credit Opened

*Closing out accounts, due to inactivity or paying off an installment loan (in my case, my car loan) can possibly ding your credit score. The reason being is because you have fewer accounts. So I have now went from having 4 installment loans to 3, and will eventually just have 2 (Student Loans and Mortgage) within the next few months. That is why I always advise my clients to not close out their credit card accounts and to make a small purchase to keep active.

*While I stress the importance of keeping accounts active and open, it does not mean to extend loans and pay more interest just to protect your credit score. Just as your score will temporarily decrease due to the closed account, there are ways to increase it by continuing to create:

1. Payment History
2. Length of Credit History

*Hope this explains a possible reason for your score to decrease after paying off an installment loan.

Credit Card Debt Recap from May 2019 to May 2020! May not seem like a lot (but best believe I have come a long way Lawd 😩😂), but now that I have officially paid off all credit card debt, I can now use my money on other things such as paying off other debts (mortgage, student loans etc) and placing more into savings! Hope this inspires someone

Last month, as you guys know, I was able to make my last payment on my car note 🙌🏾. If you guys knew the story about me having to get this car, you’d know that it was a love/relationship 😂. This past weekend, I received the title to my 2015 Toyota Camry, so it’s OFFICIAL 🙌🏾🎉🙌🏾🎉🙌🏾🎉 What are some things you are excited to pay off?!?!

With the current crisis going on around the world, many people have been displaced with work. During this stressful time, many creditors are offering assistance to their customers, from waiving fees, extending payment dates, offering credits, and even lowering interest rates.

Even though you may be displaced it is very important to contact or visit your creditors website to see what options are available for you to take. Don’t assume you are an exception to making paying payments or listening to what someone else tells you. Take the time to contact or read the companies options on their website.

You don’t want to be left with damaging items reporting on your credit profile when all could have been avoided by a simple call or website visit.

Don’t become discouraged with getting a fast response, understand that customer service reps are experiencing a high call volume.
*note* the companies above may not be the only ones providing assistance, if you don’t see a company you pay each month, please contact!

Also check to see if any of your credit cards have insurance, Insurance protection will usually cover any outstanding balances due to unemployment.

Hope This Helps and Stay Safe!!!
