Summer jobs have changed a lot over the last 40 years. In 1980, many teens found seasonal work in retail, restaurants and amusement parks, earning the federal minimum wage of $3.10 per hour. Those first jobs often became part-time roles during the school year.

Today, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, but many students are also gaining experience through internships, entrepreneurship, freelancing and volunteer work. No matter how summer work looks, the lessons remain the same: responsibility, confidence, and valuable real-world experience.
