To keep this short and to the point, we want to highlight the key weather considerations for the Greater Houston area this week.
A polar vortex is expected to impact the region later this week into next, bringing unusually cold temperatures for a prolonged period. According to Eric Berger with Space City Weather (01/22/2026 at 2:20 p.m. https://spacecityweather.com/), while there is a possibility of more serious impacts, the most likely outcome is a modest and manageable cold event. That said, forecasts can change, and as the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Taking a few proactive steps now can help reduce the risk of property damage and business interruption.
Before the cold arrives, please consider the following:
· Protect pipes: Insulate exposed piping, allow faucets to drip if temperatures fall below freezing, and know where your water shut-off valves are located.
· Maintain heat: Confirm heating systems are working properly and set thermostats to maintain safe indoor temperatures, including in unoccupied areas.
· Secure the exterior: Cover or disconnect outdoor plumbing, drain sprinkler/water lines if feasible, and seal openings that allow cold air inside.
· Prepare for outages: Back up critical business data or in-house servers, test generators if applicable, and review contingency plans for power loss.
· Communicate with staff: Share closure plans, emergency contacts, and procedures for reporting any damage.
If your business will be closed over the weekend and does not require active water use, consider shutting off the main water supply and draining lines at the end of business on Friday. In the worst-case scenario, water can simply be turned back on when operations resume. For properties in areas more susceptible to power outages, this can be one of the most effective ways to prevent pipe breaks or leaks.
Stay safe and warm, and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
