Last day of August. If you take one thing from this month's posts, take this.

You do not have to wait until November.

Everybody assumes health insurance runs on the November 1 open enrollment clock. That's an ACA / Marketplace rule, and it's real for those plans. Miss the window on a Marketplace plan and you're mostly stuck unless you have a qualifying life event.

But the plans I sell aren't ACA. They're private PPO plans with nationwide networks, and they have their own rules. The big one: you can sign up 365 days a year. Any day. Not just November, not just after a major life event.

So if any of this month landed for you, the surprise lab bill, the sticker shock after leaving a job, the kid who just turned 26, the storm-season coverage question, you do not have to sit on it and wait for fall. We can look at it this week.

If you've been told you "have to wait," call me first. 713.808.1618. Any day of the year.

Here's something I believe after 40 years in this: the confusion is not an accident.

Deductible, coinsurance, out-of-pocket max, in-network, out-of-network, allowed amount, EOB, pre-authorization. It reads like a foreign language on purpose. When you can't tell what you actually owe, you are easier to overcharge, and harder to argue with.

That is the whole game a 1-800-I-don't-know-you number is playing. Keep you on hold, keep you confused, wear you down until you just pay the bill.

My entire job is to be the opposite of that. I sit on the phone with you and translate. Coinsurance is just the percentage you pay after your deductible. In-network means the provider already agreed to a discount with your plan. An EOB is not a bill, it is a receipt of what the plan did. Once you can read it, the whole thing stops being scary.

You should not need a degree to understand what you are paying for. You just need one person who will explain it in plain English and not make you feel dumb for asking.

Reply and tell me the one insurance word that has never made sense to you. I'll translate it right here, no pitch.

Or call me and we'll go through your plan together. 713.808.1618.

Texas educators give everything to our classrooms and communities. 🍎

Here's what most teachers don't know: adding a spouse to your district health plan can raise your monthly premium by $700 to $1,000.

That adds up to thousands of dollars every year, and most families have no idea they're overpaying.

💡 Here's the fix:
1️⃣ Keep the educator on the district plan.
2️⃣ Move the spouse to an independent plan with better benefits, for a lot less money.

At Magnolia City Health Insurance, we call out these overpriced plan setups and help Texas school employees keep more of their hard earned money. 💰

We'll walk you through every option available across Texas so you can make a confident, informed decision for your household.

📢 Teacher Families! Before the school year sprint begins, listen up!
Your district health plan is a good start, but it often leaves out two critical layers of protection – especially once your kids dive into sports!
🏥 Hospital Indemnity Benefit: Pays YOU cash directly if you're hospitalized. This isn't for the hospital, it's for your copays, gas, or even missed paychecks while you recover.
🤕 Accident Benefit: Separate from sickness with a lower deductible. Perfect for those playground tumbles, twisted ankles at practice, or scrimmage bumps that inevitably happen!
The best part? These benefits stack on top of your existing district coverage – they don't replace it! You keep everything you have and add a vital cash cushion for the real-life incidents of a busy family.
Don't wait for an unexpected event. Call Robert Young at Magnolia City Health Insurance today for a FREE, personalized side-by-side comparison for your specific district plan! 📞 Call Robert: 713.808.1618

Posting Chip's again, because the line he opens with is what most of my clients eventually say.

Thank you, Chip.

The part I'd underline: "more than just a number." That's the gap between a personal agent and a 1-800-I-don't-know-you number, in five words.

If you've been the number in someone else's database for a while and you want to be on a real person's call list instead, that's me.

$2,000 lab bill. Client did nothing wrong. We got it handled.

She saw an in-network doctor for a routine visit. Showed her card. Had bloodwork drawn right there in the office. Two weeks later a $2,000 bill lands, because the office sent her samples to an out-of-network lab. Nobody told her. She found out from the envelope.

She was ready to just pay it, because that is what most people do. Instead she called me.

We documented that the physician was in-network and that she had no way to know the lab was not. We pointed to the surprise-billing protections that apply when a patient is sent to an out-of-network provider they never chose. And we put a response deadline on the carrier in writing.

The charge got reworked. She paid a small fraction of the original number.

You do everything right and the system still hands you a bill. That is exactly when you need somebody whose job is to push back on it.

If a bill like this is on your kitchen counter right now, do not pay it before you send it to me.

Teacher families, before the school year gets going, two supplemental layers most district plans leave out, and both matter more once the kids are back in sports.

One. The hospital indemnity benefit. Your district plan may or may not include this. If it doesn't, you can stack one for a few dollars a month that pays YOU cash directly if you get hospitalized. Not the hospital. You. That cash covers the copays, the gas, the missed paychecks, whatever you need it for while you recover.

Two. The accident benefit. This is different from sickness, with its own (usually much lower) deductible. If you have ever had a kid trip on the playground, twist an ankle at practice, or take an elbow at a scrimmage, you know exactly why this one matters in August and September.

Here's the part people miss: these layers stack on top of your district benefits. They do not replace them. You keep everything you already have and add a cash cushion for the stuff that actually happens with a busy family.

Call me at 713.808.1618 and I'll build you a one-page side by side for your specific district plan.

It's hurricane season on the Gulf, and this is a reassurance post, not a scare post.

When a storm is in the forecast, people evacuate. They end up at a relative's place in Dallas, a hotel in San Antonio, sometimes across a state line. And every year somebody asks me the same thing: if something happens while we're away from home, are we even covered?

For the plans I sell, here is the short answer. It is a nationwide PPO network. Your coverage does not stop at the Katy city limits or the Texas state line. If you get hurt or sick while you are evacuated, or on the road, or wherever you land, the plan travels with you.

And you still have one person to call. Not a 1-800-I-don't-know-you number while you are already stressed and displaced. Me. You save my number, and if a bill shows up after all the chaos settles, you send it to me and I'll tell you what's real and what's a coding mistake.

Get your storm plan set before the cone shows up on the map. And if you want to know exactly how your health coverage works away from home, that's a quick call.
