The United States Navy was created on this day in 1775 when the Continental Congress established a naval force – the Continental Navy –to offset British naval forces.​

The early Continental Navy worked with privateers to conduct raids on transport ships carrying supplies for the British forces. After the Revolutionary War, Congress sold off the ships. However, the expansion of trade and shipping in the 1790s increased the possibility of attacks by European powers and pirates, so in March 1794, the Continental Navy was re-established.​

Today the Navy also boasts the world’s largest aircraft carrier fleet, over 300,000 active personnel, and nearly 100,000 in the Ready Reserve. We are grateful for 247 years of 24/7 service. Happy Birthday, U.S. Navy! ⚓️
