As Romans 12:18 instructs, “As you do your part to live in peace with everyone, as much as possible,” it’ll also come as you pray.

For ten days Jesus’ disciples prayed. Ten days of prayer, plus a few minutes of preaching, led to three thousand saved souls. Perhaps we invert the numbers. We’re prone to pray for a few minutes and then preach for ten days! Not the apostles. They lingered in Jesus’ presence. They never left the place of prayer.

Are you wondering, “My business needs attention, my children need dinner, my bills need paying. How can I stay in one place of prayer?” Think of it less as an activity for God and more as an awareness of God. Uninterrupted awareness. Acknowledge his presence everywhere you go!

"A New Plan"

Begin again. Fresh starts require a determined first step. You can’t change yesterday, but you can do something about tomorrow. Put God’s plan in place.

God told Joshua to revisit the place of failure. In Joshua 8:1 he said, “Arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land” (Joshua 8:1 NKJV). In essence, God told Joshua, “Let’s begin again. This time my way.”

In the first attack, Joshua consulted spies; in the second, he listened to God. In the first, he stayed home. In the second, he led the way. The first attack involved a small unit, the second involved many more men. The first attack involved no tactics, the second was strategic and sophisticated.

The point? God gave Joshua a new plan. “Begin again,” he said. “My way.” When he followed God’s strategy, victory happened. And friend, the same will happen to you.

Worry happens when we keep our problems to ourselves or present our problems to the puny deities of money, muscle, or humankind. The act of prayer moves us from a spirit of concern to a spirit of gratitude. Even before our prayers are answered, our hearts begin to change. So take these steps:

· First, take your worries to God. Set aside some time each day to pour out your concerns, complaints, fears and woes to him. Don’t suppress; express! Take everything to God and then…leave it with him.

· Find a promise to match your problem. Spend time in the promises and stories of Scripture. Find a promise that fits your problem, and build your prayers around it.

· Pray specifically. Generic prayers aren’t nearly as effective as heartfelt prayers that target particular needs.

Focus on the Present

“I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day” (2 Timothy 1:12 NKJV).

God does not need our help, counsel, or assistance. (Please repeat this phrase: “I hereby resign as ruler of the universe”). And when he is ready for us to reengage, he will let us know. Until then, replace anxious thoughts with grateful ones.

God takes thanksgiving seriously. Here’s why: gratitude keeps us focused on the present. Worry takes a meat cleaver to our thoughts, energy, and focus. Anxiety chops up our attention. Anxiety takes our attention from the right now and directs it “back then” or “out there.” But when you aren’t focused on your problem, you have a sudden availability of brain space. Use it for good.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

In the game of life, many of us who cross home plate do so because we were born on third base. Others aren’t even on a team. Now some people are poor because they are lazy, and they need to get off their duffs. Others, however, are poor because they were born in the wrong place. A latitude largely vacant of libraries, vaccinations, clean water, and paved roads.

The ultimate solution to poverty is found in the compassion of God’s people. Scripture endorses not forced communism, but Spirit-led volunteerism among God’s people. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something. What about you? Why not teach an inner-city Bible study? Use your vacation to build houses in hurricane-ravaged towns? Run for public office? Get out of your comfort zone, for Christ’s sake.
