A few days ago while I was walking Rocket and Lucky, I heard a gate fly open, and a 100 lb Rottweiler came running out at us. Thankfully his owner was on it, came sprinting out and grabbed him before my dogs were hurt. That's not the first time an off leash dog has confronted us, so I always carry a can of Halt spray (recommended by mail carriers) that doesn't damage dogs permanently, but they hate the stuff. It just goes to show, you can be having a great day, having fun, walking your dogs, then bam, $1k+ (or much worse) emergency vet bill. I have an accident and illness pet insurance policy because I don't ever want to choose between saving my babies or saving money. For the pet lovers out there, I encourage you to to get an accident only pet insurance policy, they're very inexpensive. I do accident and illness, but accident coverage will take care of your babies if they're attacked by another dog, or they somehow slip out of their harness and get hit, or even if they're a scavenger like Lucky, who's so fast and low to the ground, he can eat a wild mushroom before I even see it. That's happened to us and I had a $700 vet bill. I don't encourage anyone to buy the expensive policy that covers spay/neuter, routine exams, etc, that's usually a wash at best, but accident, or accident plus illness will help make sure you don't have to choose between your babies and financial security.
