Take 15 minutes this Friday to lock down your Social Security Number. Data breaches happen constantly, but setting up these three free locks makes your stolen SSN virtually useless to scammers.
Here is your step-by-step security checklist:
1. Freeze Your Credit at All 3 Bureaus
Lenders cannot pull your file, meaning thieves cannot open credit cards, auto loans, or mortgages in your name. Freezing and unfreezing is 100% free by federal law and doesn't impact your credit score.

2. Lock Your SSN for Employment (E-Verify "Self Lock")
Prevents anyone from using your SSN to pass an E-Verify employment background check. If you switch jobs later, you simply unlock it online before onboarding.

3. Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)
Blocks tax refund fraud. The IRS gives you a 6-digit PIN that must be entered on your federal return. Any return filed without it is automatically rejected.

4. Bonus: Claim Your "my Social Security" Account
Create your account before an identity thief does it for you. This allows you to monitor work history and verify no one is claiming benefits in your name.
