An estate plan isn't really about what happens after you're gone. It's about how much control you have over it now.

Who receives what. When. Under which structure. Whether accounts pass by will, by trust, or by beneficiary designation, and whether those designations still reflect your actual wishes.

For families with international beneficiaries or assets held across borders, there's an added layer. Foreign heirs, dual tax exposure, and jurisdiction specific succession rules can all affect how smoothly a plan executes.

Clarity now is what prevents confusion later. That's the point of the plan.

Can you keep your 401(k) after moving abroad?
Usually, yes.

Moving overseas does not automatically close the account, trigger tax or remove its U.S. tax deferred status. A 401(k) remains a U.S. retirement plan governed by U.S. rules.

What often changes is the servicing experience.

Some plan administrators restrict functionality once a foreign address is added. That can affect investment changes, rebalancing, online access, phone verification, beneficiary updates or distribution processing. These restrictions are usually provider policies, not IRS rules, and they vary widely.

There may also be withholding questions when distributions begin. Certain payments to nonresidents may be subject to U.S. withholding unless a treaty or other rule reduces the rate.

Then there is the currency issue. If your future spending is in GBP, EUR, CHF or AED, a USD denominated 401(k) is not just a retirement account. It is also a currency exposure.

Keeping the account may be possible. Managing it properly from abroad is the real planning question.

At UK pension access age, the obvious move is the 25% tax-free lump sum. For a US resident, that decision sits downstream of three or four others that shape what it actually costs.

The US doesn't uniformly recognize the UK lump sum as tax-free; professional interpretations differ under the treaty, and the position needs to be documented in writing before any payment is taken, since it isn't generally reversible afterward. Beneficiary nominations on UK pensions run through scheme-trustee discretion, separate from a US will or trust. From April 2027, unused UK pension funds are proposed to fall within UK inheritance tax scope, which changes how much a drawdown plan should draw down versus leave.

Kumar Patel, Private Wealth Adviser at Skybound Wealth USA, discusses the sequence of decisions worth working through before the first call to a UK scheme administrator.

What happens to your wealth and your family when you're no longer here? It's not a comfortable question. It's still worth answering early.

Estate planning gets reduced to "the will" more often than it should. In practice, it covers how your accounts actually pass, whether federal or state estate tax applies, how assets are titled, and whether your beneficiary designations still match your intentions.

For families with heirs, assets, or property in more than one country, the picture gets more layered. A plan built around one jurisdiction doesn't always hold up against the rules of another.

None of this needs deciding today. It does need reviewing before it becomes urgent.

A letter arrives stating the account holder resides outside the US and must restrict, transfer, or liquidate within 30 days. It's become a common letter for Americans living abroad, and the deadline is rarely as fixed as it reads.

The restrictions are commercial rather than regulatory, driven by a firm's licensing framework in the client's country of residence rather than any SEC requirement. Forced liquidation of a taxable account creates a capital gain on the firm's schedule, not the client's; a forced 401(k) or IRA distribution can add a 10% early-withdrawal penalty on top. A trustee-to-trustee transfer to a custodian that accepts non-US residents typically avoids the tax event.

Tom Pewtress, Private Wealth Partner and Head of Skybound Wealth USA, discusses the options available when a brokerage closure notice arrives, and how to plan ahead of one.

Alexandra Merz, former Managing Director in energy markets at Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan, has joined Skybound Wealth as a Private Wealth Adviser in London, working with the group’s UK and U.S. advisory businesses.

Her earlier banking career also included a Director role at Deutsche Bank, with senior responsibilities across European energy markets. More recently, she spent almost a decade at Vie International, advising expatriates and families with US and UK financial ties on investments, retirement and wealth preservation.

She brings more than 25 years of experience across international banking and financial markets, including almost a decade advising private clients. That means an understanding of how markets work, alongside years helping families make decisions about how to invest, prepare for retirement and protect what they have built.

Alexandra’s appointment strengthens our London team for internationally connected clients, particularly individuals and families whose pensions, investments and financial decisions involve both the UK and US.

As Mike Coady puts it:

“We are building a business where experienced advisers have the support and international reach to do their best work for clients. Alexandra strengthens our London team, and her decision to join us says something about the business we are building.”

Welcome to Skybound, Alexandra.

Do you know what your UK pension is actually worth?

For many U.S. residents, the honest answer is no.

A pension left behind in the UK doesn't disappear when you move. It's still invested, still growing or shrinking, and still governed by UK pension rules even though you now live in the U.S.

The gap usually isn't the pension itself. It's the visibility. What it's worth, how it's invested, when it can be accessed, and what happens to it on death are questions that get harder to answer the longer a pension sits untouched.

None of that changes on its own. It changes when someone reviews it.

A UK pension can be a meaningful part of a U.S. retirement plan. It just needs to be understood first.

Why does a pension from a job you left years ago still matter?

Because most of its value sits in what hasn't been decided yet.

How the funds are currently invested. Whether that positioning still fits your goals. When and how you can access the money. What tax applies if you take it while living in the U.S. What happens to the pension if you die before drawing on it.

These aren't small details. For many people, a UK pension represents years of contributions and growth sitting quietly behind a retirement plan otherwise built around U.S. accounts. Ignoring it doesn't make it smaller. It just makes the eventual decision harder to get right.

A Gulf posting is one of the more tax-efficient postings available to an internationally mobile career. Almost none of that efficiency carries into the US tax system.

The end-of-service benefit is typically the largest pre-arrival decision most Gulf departures face: received before US residency starts, it typically sits outside the US tax net; received after, it's ordinary income with no foreign tax credit available to offset it. Most Gulf states have no comprehensive tax treaty with the US, so the pension deferral that softens a UK or EU move isn't available here. Offshore bonds and international pension plans often fail US tax tests and carry PFIC exposure on top.

Tom Pewtress, Private Wealth Partner and Head of USA at Skybound Wealth USA, discusses the accounts and timing decisions that shape a Gulf-to-US move.
