💡 Here are three ways everyone can save:

Fixed Account:

Fixed growth set by the institution, like in a bank, cash deposit, or a money market fund. This is a good option because it’s guaranteed to grow. However, it’s also guaranteed to not grow enough. Expect 1-3% returns per year. Useful for an emergency fund but not so much for getting a decent retirement income.

Stock Market:

Most retirement savings plans fall into this category (403b, 401a, 401k, etc.). In this strategy, your money has a better chance of growth than in a fixed account, however, you can lose it just as quickly. In 2008, 401k savers lost over 30% of their savings due to a market crash. To take an income from this strategy, DALBAR (the nation's leading financial services market research firm) recommends taking 3% of the total nest egg each year. The reason for this is that those monies need to be moved into a conservative position at retirement age which will gain about 4-5% a year. This move is to protect them from market losses in more vulnerable years.

Index Strategy:

Similar to the stock market strategy with one key difference - the index strategy grows with the stock market up to 13% a year and locks in those gains each year with a zero percent floor. This means that what you've saved and earned in interest each year cannot be lost due to a market downturn or correction. This strategy aims to have solid and safe growth since your account can still earn up to 13% a year without risking market loss during retirement, the income you can expect from it is 6-10% conservatively of your nest egg each year. The idea here is to give up some of your upside potential in exchange for complete downside protection.
