What’s the difference if I take my Social Security at age 62, 66 or age 70?

Answer:
If your benefit at age 66 is about $1000 a month, and you choose to take your Social Security at age 62, it would be reduced to about $700 a month for your lifetime. If you wait to take your Social Security until age 70, it would increase to about $1320 for your lifetime benefit. Other details apply, so if you have questions, give me a call.

Today’s question—

If I take Social Security at age 62, will I get Medicare then also?

NO! Social Security and Medicare are separate benefits. If you are on Disability, you will qualify for Medicare after two years. If not, everyone becomes Medicare-eligible at age 65 if you have paid into the system for ten years (40 quarters).

Today’s question—

I’m turning 65 in October. Should I have received my Medicare card?

If you are a W-2 employee on group insurance, or if you took your Social Security early, you should receive your card three months before your 65th birthday.

If you are self-employed or a 1099 employee, you will need to contact Social Security and apply for Medicare A and B. I can help you do that.

Today's question: I have VA. Do I have to join Medicare?

No, you do not have to, but it is recommended by the VA. If you decide you want to add Medicare at a later date, you can, but you need to understand the penalties you would be subject to and the benefits you may have missed in the meantime.
