How to Get the Maximum Social Security Benefit
Maximizing your Social Security benefits is a key part of retirement planning, and it’s something I often discuss with clients here at M. A. NEAL Financial Services. For those with 35 years of maximum earnings, the highest monthly benefit available is $5,181 at age 70. Most people, however, see an average benefit of $2,071 following the recent 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment. It’s important to remember that your benefit will depend on your personal earnings, work history, and the age at which you claim. Navigating these decisions can have a lasting impact on your retirement income, so understanding the variables is essential.

Retirement Traps New Federal Retirees Miss
After nearly two decades helping clients navigate federal retirement, I’ve seen how easily overlooked details can disrupt even the most carefully laid plans. One common pitfall: new federal retirees often encounter pension delays lasting several months. To bridge the gap smoothly, it’s wise to keep a healthy cash buffer on hand for those early weeks of transition.

Retirement also brings a new tax landscape. Pension income, TSP withdrawals, Social Security, Roth conversions, and required minimum distributions (RMDs) now interact in ways that differ from your working years. An annual leave payout can significantly increase your taxable income in the year you retire—something to factor into your planning. Conversely, lower income after retirement may make you eligible to request a reconsideration of any Medicare surcharge.

Many longtime savers are hesitant to draw down their TSP, but those first retirement years are often the best opportunity for travel, family time, and pursuing what you’ve worked so hard to enjoy. Lastly, your choice of survivor benefits has a direct impact on your spouse’s eligibility for federal health coverage. That’s why it’s so important to coordinate your pension, TSP, tax strategy, health care, and investments as a cohesive plan. Thoughtful preparation can help you avoid these traps and make the most of your federal retirement.
