A Shell gas station converting to an EV charging station is a glimpse into the future.

When EVs are as convenient to refuel, have comparable range between refueling, and are financially competitive with ICE vehicles, they will be preferred by consumers. Why not? Until then the average consumer will put their own convenience and pocketbook ahead of their concerns about global climate change.

Dealers will have to be prepared for the uncertainty as to just when or if that’ll occur. Know this. Investments are required now in service departments to accommodate the conversion to EVs. Here are just a few: installing more charging stations, employing and training a new breed of techs, reimagining of service bays, and acquiring a separate parts inventory.

It’s a new world for dealers. Give us a call to discuss where you stand.

This scathing article on Elon Musk was written by my friend Jamie Kitman.

“The fact that Tesla don’t have dealerships has allowed them to evade regulation…”

The article puts a spotlight on serious problems like Tesla’s suspension collapses. Without independent dealerships to act as the customers’ buffer, Musk controls that kind of damaging information. The article is a terrific read but dealers will be most interested in jumping to the last paragraph on page 58.

My opinion… dealers have an often overlooked consumer protection role. Factory direct sales and service, especially for these de novo new manufacturers, may not be consumer friendly after all.
