Edward Guyer II for Hoopa Tribal Chairman

Edward Guyer II for Hoopa Tribal Chairman I am asking your support in the upcoming election for Hoopa Tribal Chairman!

06/12/2019

As the 2019 General Election is approaching I have been mulling over who to support for Chairman of the Hoopa Valley Tribe. I have only been contacted by one candidate!!!

I spoke at length with Byron Nelson about issues currently facing our tribe and our future. Although i do not agree with every idea, we had similar views on many major issues and plans for the tribe proceeding forward.

The reason I ran for Chairman was to make a positive change for the Hoopa Tribe and our people. After speaking with Byron Nelson, I feel he is the change we need at this time. It may not be the total change we were hoping for, but it would be a change to move the tribe in the right direction.
If we continue in our current direction. we will continue to stagnate as a tribe.

I will be supporting Byron Nelson for Chairman of the Hoopa Valley Tribe in the General Election on June 18th, 2019!!

I hope you will do the same, remember to get out and vote! Every vote counts its OUR TRIBE, and these decisions impact our people each and every day!

Well, someone decided it was needed to vandalize my campaign signs last night. I’m not looking at it as negative though. I see it as someone is scared of me winning this election and acted out of fear.

Don’t forget to vote today !!!

It was nice to receive our 1st chairman’s report in years. But coincidently this comes out right before election . This is basically a campaign letter for our current chairman paid for by us as members. Every member has the right to run, but not everyone has the tribes financial backing to help them campaign.

I have some questions of the items in the letter regarding law enforcement plans.

What is executive protection used for? Is this the tribal police officer who travels with him while the chairman is on travel as his personal security? What are the threats to our chairman that he needs personal security while traveling ? This is a huge liability issue for the tribe as well as personal liability for the officer if anything occurred while off the reservation!

I agree with handling resource calls but we do not need a separate department to accomplish this. We simply need to assign officers to patrol our forest areas. Creating a new department only costs money that we currently do not have. Also liability issues would arise from a department not trained as police who would be armed in our forest areas.

Regarding the tribal national guard
What would their purpose be ? What functions would they be involved in? What training would they receive? This is very scary with all the unknowns. Would they be armed ? It seems as this would be used at the chairman’s discretion to do as he wishes. I am not in favor of these ideas as they seem like a waste of money used to create a “Goon squad” for the council and chair to further abuse their power.

We as a people need to stand up and change the future. If our tribe becomes bankrupt we will lose our self governance, the ability to manage ourselves, and will again be under control of the BIA. We were once the leader in Indian country for self governance, natural resources , and many other areas. But we have fell into complacency and no longer strive to be the innovators, we have become only followers.

We as members need to be striving for equality and fairness in hiring. Transparency in our government. And an attitude of rebuilding and growth.

Any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
