In honor of Small Business Week, we’re celebrating the local businesses that quietly become part of everyday life in their communities.
For over 100 years, Fujikami Florist has been one of those places in Hawaii, growing through generations of care, craftsmanship, and genuine connection.
“My grandfather started it in 1919… it went from my grandfather to my uncle to my mom… and now me,” says owner Eileen Miura.
For Eileen, the shop represents something she’s always known.
“It was my play area when I was younger… then I started from the bottom—answering phones, helping customers, and doing arrangements.”
And somewhere along the way, working alongside immediate, extended, and chosen family members stuck.
“Nothing beat working with family… I liked working with the flowers, my family, the customers.”
That feeling still shows up in how she runs Fujikami Florist today where every order starts with a conversation, not a checkout page.
“I ask my customers a zillion questions! What is this for? What’s the recipient’s favorite color? Everyone’s different.”
In a world of quick clicks and faceless purchases, her approach is refreshingly personal.
“My customers… they’ve been coming for years. They’re like family.”
More than a century in, the shop continues to grow, evolving with each generation, while holding onto what matters most: dedication to providing a great experience to customers.
And that’s the message Eileen has for the next generation of entrepreneurs.
“If owning a business is your dream, then you should try it… it’s tough, but try it.”
This Small Business Week, we’re celebrating businesses like Fujikami Florist—rooted in family, woven into the community, and built to last. 🌸
