Mortgage rates dropped on Friday to below 6% for the first time since 2023 after Trump announced a directive to Fannie and Freddie to buy $200 Million in mortgage-backed securities.

However, mortgage applications are down, job growth remains sluggish, and housing starts continue to decline. This signals some caution in the market.

And just to make things more exciting, Jerome Powell announced he is under investigation which has not been welcome news to the market.

What looked like what might be the start of something good for rates on Friday has been tempered with the Powell news over the weekend.
