My heart aches for the lost lives and families in the New Zealand Muslim community. Two years ago, Americans flooded the airports and the courts to say religious hatred and bigotry must stop. For everyone who stands for what is honorable and just and can make a difference, stay in the fight.

The ‘Aina Pono Hawai‘i State Farm to School Program celebrated another milestone today on Kauai with ‘Ele‘ele Elementary School becoming the first Hawai‘i Department of Education school to officially serve kalo or taro in its food service menu.

“It’s very gratifying to see how much the ‘Aina Pono Hawai‘i State Farm to School Program has revolutionized school meals,” said Lt. Governor Doug Chin. “So many students, farmers and state legislators have already praised the program for providing healthy meals made with locally produced ingredients.”

Everyone wants the program to succeed and grow, which has been the goal for the Office of the Lieutenant Governor since it launched the program in 2015 and began working with public and private sectors.

Today, ‘Ele‘ele Elementary Principal Paul Zina invited Lt. Governor Chin, Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho and Kauai Mayor-elect Derek Kawakami to help serve kalo to the students and taste the goodness themselves in the form of the Poi Breakfast Parfait, made with poi, plain yogurt, pineapple chunks and granola.

They also talked story with Principal Zina and Kaina Makua, of the Aloha Aina Poi Company, about the importance of sustaining local farmers and producers so they can continue to supply public schools with fresh, local ingredients. One example was in the taro field right there on the ‘Ele‘ele school campus, where a Kumu Sabra Kauka and Kumu Chad Shimmelfennig’s fifth grade class presented a cultural program to celebrate the land and the coming together to be able to feed our keiki healthy food while they’re in school.

Lt. Governor Chin, the Hawai‘i State Department of Education (HIDOE) and the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture have been working together with private stakeholders to transform HIDOE’s School Food Services Branch. The work in progress is making a difference that public school students will be able to taste and enjoy for years to come.

It was my pleasure to attend the Oahu Filipino Community Council’s 59th Anniversary and Presidents’ Ball at the Filipino Community Center, where I reaffirmed the new set of OFCC officers.

The OFCC, established 59 years ago, is an Island wide organization composed of more than 60 Filipino-American organizations on Oahu. These organizations’ objectives include community development, leadership, educational and outreach programs, social events, and networking.

The mission of the Council is to promote and perpetuate the Filipino cultural heritage, to help unite all Filipino organizations for the common welfare of the Filipino community, and to encourage all Filipinos to develop a strong sense of responsibility and a greater participation for the betterment of the Filipino community and the island of Oahu as a whole.

On behalf of the State of Hawaii, I recently attended the first meeting of the Defensive Cyber Industry Consortium (DCIC) on November 9th at the invite of Major General Arthur “Joe” Logan, the Adjutant General of Hawaii.

The DCIC kick-off brought together an impressive group of military, federal, state, city, and private sector leaders representing the critical infrastructure providers that are essential to U.S. Info Pacific Command Defensive Cyber Coordination Center.

I recently addressed the United Filipino Council of Hawaii (UFCH) at its annual Installation of Officers and Progress Awards at the Filipino Community Center.

The UFCH is a statewide organization composed of six island councils, namely Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Big Island, Molokai, and Lanai. There are approximately 350 unit organizations under these island councils, whose objectives include community development, leadership, educational scholarships and outreach programs, social events, and networking.

The UFCH sponsors the annual Progress Awards Program to recognize outstanding Hawaii residents of Filipino ancestry for their excellence and accomplishments in their field of expertise, as well as their dedication and service to the community-at-large. These individuals serve as inspirational role models for others with similar backgrounds, goals and characteristics.

I recently delivered opening remarks at the Clearing the Cloud: Hawaii’s Youth Va**ng Epidemic Conference.

The Hawaii Public Health Institute conducted the event and brought together health professionals from all over Hawaii and the Mainland to increase awareness, knowledge and open up the discussion further on electronic smoking devices, also called e-cigarettes or vapes, and its impact on our state.

Youth va**ng is a major concern and has become a high priority issue for our state. While cigarette and other to***co usage among Hawaii youth has been steadily decreasing over the years, unfortunately, the use of electronic smoking devices such as e-cigarettes and va**ng devices, have been exponentially increasing.

The Hawaii State Department of Health says about 45 percent of high school students say they’ve tried e-cigarettes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now ranks e-cigs as the most commonly used nicotine-delivery product among U.S. youth, with minors more likely than adults to use the devices.

I thanked all participants for addressing the va**ng epidemic. By working together, sharing and discussing – we can generate solutions and improvements to keep our children and communities safer and healthier.

I recently met with Zhang Ping, the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, who assumed his position in Los Angeles in November 2017.

Consul General Zhang wanted to see Hawaii and meet with members of our state government because 200,000 tourists from China visited Hawaii last year. We discussed cultural and business opportunities and the Green Global Island Summit, which I attended and met representatives from China's Hainan Island.

Shao Junying, Consul and head of political section, and Yu Quanlong, Deputy Consul and Secretary to Consul General, also attended the courtesy meeting.

It was my sincere honor to lay a wreath, on behalf of the State of Hawaii, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, which stands atop a hill overlooking Washington, D.C.

In 1921, Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American soldier from World War I in the plaza of the new Memorial Amphitheater.

Inscribed on the back of the Tomb are the words: Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God.

The Tomb is guarded, and has been guarded, every minute of every day since 1937.
