Big Island Federal Credit Union was featured on another episode of HINow Daily to commemorate its 90th anniversary. It took a determined group of Big Island teachers with 30 dollars to form the very first credit union in Hawaii. Big Island Teachers Federal Credit Union was chartered on April 27, 1936. With membership now open to Big Island residents, the credit union is now Big Island Federal Credit Union.

Big Island Federal Credit Union marks 90 years as Hawaii's first credit union, built on a People Helping People philosophy since 1936.

Hawaii’s credit unions have long supported this work by hosting Financial Reality Fairs in local high schools.

On February 18, 2026, the HINow Daily TV show highlighted these efforts, featuring Aloha Pacific FCU’s Lori Kurokawa and Hawaii Community FCU’s Nellie Medeiros. Their discussion underscored how Financial Reality Fairs give students practical, engaging experiences that align with the DOE’s new financial literacy graduation requirement.

Credit unions bring Financial Reality Fairs to local high schools, teaching students real-life money skills for a stronger future.

Love this! All for the keiki!

Join us and KBIG FM for this year's Toy Drive. 🎁

Drop off unwrapped toys at any HFS FCU branch November 24 – December 14🗓️

As everyday costs continue to rise, more families need support during the holidays. Last year, thanks to our wonderful community, we distributed over 1,000 toys to keiki through local non-profits including Neighborhood Place of Puna, Neighborhood Place of Kona, Project Hawai'i, Hope Services, and the Queen Lili'uokalani Trust.

Let's keep that spirit alive and spread joy to Big Island keiki this holiday season! 🧡

Cool!
