Severe weather is possible. Here is a quick list of things that may be helpful:

⦿ Report a power outage: 800-888-2726
⦿ Report flooding or dangerous road conditions: TEXT or CALL 205-322-6200 or 911.
⦿ Unplug sensitive electronics as it looks like strong lightning is expected.
⦿ Might be good to charge phones and devices before storms arrive today.
⦿ Consider setting refrigerators and freezers slightly colder a few hours before storms arrive.
⦿ If at any point you shelter in place, be sure you are wearing shoes. Post storm, you will be thankful you have them on.
⦿ Check on elderly neighbors or anyone who may need extra help.

After five decades of marriage, if I’ve learned anything it’s that you don’t stand in the way of a Homewood Mama that is on a mission!

That’s why I want to spotlight these Homewood residents who are sharing their journey and making a difference. Homewood residents Ashley Irwin Gustin, Lauren Gwaltney, and Ashley Copeland Berkery who are on a mission to help other families by launching the Dyslexia Den podcast.

Ashley, Lauren, and Ashley are three mothers who have children with dyslexia and wanted to become a voice, a resource, and a beacon of hope for other families on the same journey. As colder air moves into Alabama this weekend, some areas could see freezing rain, snow or ice. We understand how disruptive winter weather can be when it arrives suddenly, and we care about helping you stay safe and prepared. Taking time to prepare now is important, as ice and snow can weigh down tree branches and power lines, sometimes causing them to fall.

Prep early
📱Charge devices: Phones, tablets and battery packs so you can stay connected
🎒Check supplies: Blankets, warm clothing, essential medications, bottled water and 2–3 days of shelf-stable food
🔥Plan for safe heating: Use only heating sources designed for indoor use with proper ventilation — never use grills, generators or fuel-burning heaters indoors
❗️Generator safety: Never operate generators indoors or connect them to your home’s wiring
🚗If you may need to drive: Keep an emergency supply kit in your car
🌳Clear outdoor hazards: Secure loose items and park vehicles away from trees or power lines when possible

When winter weather hits
❗️Stay away from downed lines: Ice can weigh down tree limbs and power lines, causing them to fall
🚗Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary: roads may be slick and hazardous
⚠️Carbon monoxide safety: Never use grills, gas stoves or ovens to heat your home; make sure CO detectors are working
