What if one of your worst-performing investments could actually help you at tax time?
Sounds strange, right?
Most investors look at a losing stock and see one thing: money lost.
But a financial advisor might see something else.
A potential tax-planning opportunity.
It’s called tax-loss harvesting, and it’s one of the strategies worth reviewing before December 31.
Here’s a simple example:
Imagine you sold an investment this year and made a $10,000 capital gain.
But you also have another investment that’s lost $4,000 in value.
If you sell that investment and realize the loss, you may be able to offset part of your gains.
That means potentially paying capital gains taxes on $6,000 instead of $10,000.
And that’s not all.
✅ Eligible net capital losses may offset up to $3,000 of ordinary income annually ($1,500 if married filing separately).
✅ Unused losses may carry forward into future tax years.
✅ Losses from previous years could already be available to use.
But here’s what many people miss:
Tax-loss harvesting has rules, including the IRS wash-sale rule, which can disallow a loss if substantially identical securities are purchased within 30 days before or after the sale.
And selling an investment solely for a tax deduction isn’t always a good financial decision.
That’s why tax planning and investment planning should work together.
April is for filing. October is for planning.
