Just your weekly reminder that if something changes about your home - you sell it, you rent it (or a portion out), or you get a new roof put on, PLEASE tell your insurance agent! On more than one occasion, we've had clients have roof claims without our knowledge. That itself is not an issue, but it can leave money on the table, especially with a roof that is 10 years of age or older!

On a more serious note.

This is terrible all around. To start, agency employees have very, VERY little do to with claims, and oftentimes we are left completely out of the process. Yes, we can (and will) call claims adjusters to get answers to questions if you are not understanding. HOWEVER, they are under no obligation to talk to us and we are going to have little effect on claim outcome.

Second, this is why notifying your agent or carrier of changes is important. Things like... Address changes (especially state to state), bank account changes, or even general life changes. Even the smallest, most innocuous things affect you. This is also why most agents try to sign people up on EFT over invoice billing or Recurring CC. We all have stories of having to get policies reinstated due to a lapse from a missed payment from an expired CC.

Third, which also ties into #2, read the policy. Let your agent know of any special concerns you might have. Ask questions. If we don't easily have (or are easily able to find) an answer, we can get one from underwriting. But we can only hazard and add so much to a policy. If you have more than a nominal amount of an item, let us know so we can present you with the best options.

The overarching lesson is to communicate with your agent. The information that we are relaying is to make sure there are no hitches in the giddyup in a claims scenario.

Now, I don't know the details of this claim and what led the man to take such drastic actions. But, I CAN tell you some generalized rules to abide by that will help minimize the chance that your claim will be denied!

Let's use this as a teachable moment. Ya'll - if something changes, tell your agent! If you don't know something, ask your agent! Get the right coverages or endorsements on there. Yes, doing this does have a cost... But right now this person has suffered more than one serious financial setback for any number of reasons. This all could have been avoided with a call and a conversation.

WHAT. A. WEEKEND!

Those that know me know of my passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; it's something that I've been doing for 10 years and is as large a part of my life as anything. My client Springfield BJJ reached out to me several weeks ago as they were going to be hosting King of the Mat tournament. So, I not only got to do work within my passion, but I also got to rep Tap Cancer Out, a bjj-based 501(c)(3), who I also have the pleasure of being an Ambassador for.

I watched over 50 people compete, put on a beautiful display of jiu jitsu, and made some new friends! Can't thank these two men enough - Brian Stuebner from Springfield BJJ and Chad Michael Hawkins from KOTM for the opportunity.

Look at this Mad Lad! Several months ago I received an email from MAIA about a CIC designation scholarship. Ran with it. Was selected! Super excited to begin working on this and furthering my knowledge and understanding for myself AND, most importantly, my clients!

One of my favorite aspects of this job is being able to work with other agencies like Dale Sanders Agency - American Family Insurance to find solutions for clients and potential clients. In this case, Brett had referred a widow with several losses for me to help. Two of the losses shouldn't have been reported, but that's an entirely different discussion.

With help from our broker, AmWINS, I was able to get coverage with Scottsdale and cut her home premium in H A L F. Half, on its own, sounds great, right? When you consider her premium with ASI was almost $5,000, well, that changes things.

Important information that you might need as a property owner, whether it's a car, a house, a condo, or even just contents of your rented abode...

No one tells your insurance agent if/when you sell. Calling after the fact can create issues on our end due to some carriers not allowing us to backdate more than 30 days without proof.
