Just like the first telegraph or phone call, the first email marked a historic moment in the evolution of communication. Unfortunately, the email message itself was not so significant as the text of that first electronic message read "something like QWERTYUIOP," the first row of letters on a keyboard.

This was sent by computer engineer Ray Tomlinson in 1971 in Cambridge, Massachusetts and was delivered via ARPANET, which was the precursor to the Internet which consisted of a network of computers. This was done merely as a test to make sure that the message was delivered.
