It is about progress not always perfection!

I am reminded of this when I see posts that say, "you should be doing this over doing that." And while it might be true and well intentioned it overlooks the awesome behaviors people are doing.

I see this a lot with conversations about Roth versus Pre-Tax.
And while there is definitely room for valuable advice let's not ignore the positive behavior of maxing out a 401(k) regardless of deferral election.

Did you know that only 14% of Americans who have a 401(k) actually max it out? (I didn't until I just looked it up).

So, if you are one of the 14% and see those posts about making a "mistake" by doing one election deferral or the other, worry not, you are definitely winning.

And to me (and any advisors this resonates with): Remember that while things can be improved, we should not ignore the great behaviors that are already happening.

If you receive RSUs, this is for you.

RSUs are great. The tax aftertaste, not so much.

RSUs are taxed in the year they vest whether you sell them or not.

And while companies do withhold taxes at vesting, it’s often based on a flat supplemental rate (typically ~22% federally, plus payroll and state taxes). Which passes the eye test for a lot of people.

Until you realize your actual tax bracket might be much higher.

So, what happens?

You receive your net shares, months go by, and you don’t think much of it.

Then tax season hits.

Your CPA tells you the withholding wasn’t enough.

Now you’re left with a tax bill you weren’t planning for.

And if there isn’t cash sitting around?

You may need to sell investments. Potentially trigger more taxes.
And hope the market has been doing well at the time you sell.

All because of one overlooked detail.

RSUs aren’t the problem.

It’s assuming the withholding took care of everything.

Somewhere along the line in my role as a financial advisor, I developed a saying: Don't sacrifice tomorrow to live for today, but don't sacrifice today to live for tomorrow.

I wanted to convey that a good plan is all about balance and to remind my clients that it is okay to spend money on discretionary things now, even though it will mean having less wealth later.

Later is likely but is not a guarantee, so plan accordingly!
