FSA will begin notifying farmers on June 1 about updated base acres for Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC), marking the first opportunity to update base acreage in 24 years. The changes will calculate new eligible base acres using planting history from 2019 to 2023. Unless landowners opt out within 90 days, eligible acres will automatically be added to farm program coverage for the 2026 crop year.
The update is intended to better align farm program eligibility with current planting patterns, particularly for farms that have expanded or shifted crop rotations since base acres were last established. If demand exceeds the national cap, the USDA will prorate new acreage by crop type and geography. For farmers, the update may increase access to ARC and PLC payments and strengthen commodity program support tied to today’s planted acres rather than historical farm maps.
