5 things I'd never do with Social Security. #1 is almost impossible to undo.

5. File without checking your earnings record.
4. Claim early while still working before full retirement age.
3. Assume your check is tax-free.
2. Claim out of fear that Social Security is running out.
1. Let the higher earner in a marriage claim early. The survivor keeps the bigger check, so claiming it early can shrink it for the rest of your spouse's life.

Moving closer to the grandkids in retirement? Watch this first.

Moving near family is one of the biggest retirement decisions you'll make, and it's hard to undo. It changes your costs, your taxes and how you spend your time. Get clear on the money and the "why" before you list the house.

Social Security looks at your 35 highest earning years, not your last 10. If you only worked 30, they put zeros in the math. Here's what to check. Follow for more retirement income tips to make your hard-earned dollars work for you.

Widowed before 62? Social Security can start paying you at 60.

The survivor benefit is paid from your late spouse's work record, up to 100% of what they were getting. You can start it as early as 60 (50 if you're disabled), but it's about 30% smaller than at full retirement age. Many people take the survivor check first and let their own benefit keep growing until 70, then switch if theirs is bigger. Still working? Watch the earnings limit before full retirement age.

Navigating retirement means shifting from accumulation to distribution. Which income style fits your disposition? A market-based approach offers flexibility but no guarantees. Or perhaps a blended approach: guarantee essential needs, then use market growth for discretionary spending. Your choice reflects your unique needs and preferences, not a universal right or wrong.

She moved near the grandkids. Her bills jumped to $10K a month.

What we didn't have time to cover on camera:
• A cash cushion covers her bills when the market is down, so she doesn't have to sell at a bad time.
• Part of her money pays her now. Part is set up to grow and help keep up with rising prices.
• Her taxes are planned out each quarter, so there's no surprise bill in April.

Representative example based on a real client situation, with details changed for privacy. Education only. Not a guarantee and not individual advice.

If you're married, the most important Social Security decision isn't yours. It's the higher earner's, because that's the check the survivor keeps. Follow for more retirement income tips to make your hard-earned dollars work for you.

Divorced after 10+ years of marriage? You may be able to claim on your ex's Social Security record, and it doesn't reduce their check.
