Most people start the life insurance conversation with the wrong question.

“How much should I get?”

$250,000? $500,000? A million?

Those numbers can sound reassuring, but they don’t tell you whether the coverage actually fits your household.

A better place to start is:

What would this money need to do for the people depending on me?

Replace income?
Help keep the mortgage paid?
Handle debts and final expenses?
Support future goals?
Give the family time to adjust?

Then look at what already exists — personal coverage, workplace coverage, savings, and other resources — before deciding what gap remains.

The right amount is personal. It should come from the job the coverage needs to do, not from a round number that simply sounds good.

But that is exactly what thousands of Nevada families have been dealing with as the Hawk Fire burns near Reno.

As of Monday afternoon, officials reported 32 homes destroyed, with about 23,000 residents still under “GO NOW” evacuation orders and another 40,000 under “GET SET” warnings.

This is not a post about being afraid of what might happen.

It is a reminder that insurance is something we usually buy for a day we hope never comes — and that the worst time to learn what your policy says is while you are trying to figure out where your family is sleeping that night.

A few things worth knowing before an emergency:
• Where your policy is stored
• Your deductible and major limits
• Whether you have loss-of-use / additional living expense coverage
• How to reach your carrier and agent
• Whether you have a current home inventory

Nevada’s Division of Insurance says many homeowners and renters policies cover fire and smoke damage, and some policies may reimburse covered additional living expenses such as lodging, meals, or transportation. Exact coverage depends on the policy.

To everyone affected by the fires in Northern Nevada: stay safe and follow local evacuation instructions.
