Here’s the honest truth: most people don’t need to understand all of Medicare. They need to understand three things about their own situation.
First, when your enrollment window opens. It’s tied to your 65th birthday, and it doesn’t stay open forever.

Second, what coverage you have right now — employer plan, retiree coverage, spouse’s plan, or nothing at all. That single answer changes everything about what you should do next.

Third, who you can call when you have a question. Preferably someone local who’ll pick up the phone.

That’s it. Everything else can be explained one step at a time.
If your 65th birthday is somewhere on the horizon, don’t wait until the month before to start asking questions. A conversation now is a whole lot easier than a scramble later.
