The New Hampshire banking community is celebrating an important step forward in the fight against fraud.
This morning, the New Hampshire Bankers Association shared that Governor Ayotte has signed SB 622 into law, expanding New Hampshire's identity fraud protections beyond the impersonation of individuals to include the impersonation of banks, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations. This legislation strengthens efforts to combat spoofing scams that attempt to trick consumers by posing as trusted institutions.
Previously, identity fraud laws focused on the impersonation of individuals. Under SB 622, impersonating a bank, business, government agency, or other organization is also covered, helping law enforcement better address modern spoofing scams.
🔏 What does this mean?
By expanding the state's identity fraud statute to include entities—not just individuals—New Hampshire is helping address the growing threat of fraudsters who pretend to be banks and other trusted organizations to gain access to sensitive information.
🔏 How does this protect you?
The law gives law enforcement additional tools to pursue criminals who use spoofed phone numbers, emails, websites, account information, and other tactics to impersonate organizations and deceive consumers.
🔏 The law takes effect on January 1, 2027.
