Being smart isn’t the same as being organized. ⚙️
Many teams don’t struggle because people don’t care.
They struggle because everyone is working from a different playbook.
Simple systems create consistency.
Good documentation builds trust.
Clear processes make better decisions easier.
Whether you’re leading a board or a business, your systems often determine your success.

The Mitlin Money Mindset is a weekly podcast hosted by financial advisor and the founder of New York based Mitlin Financial Lawrence Sprung Larry Sprung, CFP®, CEPA®

Financial advisor Lawrence Sprung, CFP®, CEPA® has spent more than 20 years helping families think through decisions like this one:

When an investment has done well: Do you leave it or take some of the win off the table?

It’s not always an easy call.

When something has performed exceptionally well, selling some of it can feel like you’re giving up on an investment that’s working.

But taking some of the win off the table doesn’t necessarily mean you think it’s going down.

Sometimes it simply means recognizing how much has changed.

What started as a relatively small piece of your portfolio may now represent a much larger percentage of it.

And that money may have another job now.

It could help diversify your portfolio. It could fund something you’ve been planning for years.

Or it could give you the opportunity to do something with your family while everyone is able to enJOY it.

Like most aspects of personal finance, there isn’t one right answer…...

But when something has worked out really well, it’s worth thinking about what now.

How do you approach a well-performing piece of your portfolio?

📈 A Strong August Sets Stocks Up for a Better September Than Feared

Key Takeaways:
▪️The S&P 500 gained again last week and is set to close out a solid month of August.
▪️A major earnings report and the Fed’s Jackson Hole symposium came and went without denting the rally.
▪️Historically, September is the worst month of the year on average, but there is reason to think it might not be so bad this year.
▪️Nominal GDP growth is running near its late-1990s pace, but interest rates are much lower.
▪️ Lower inflation (or low growth expectations) could justify a lower rate, but higher rates are a risk if nominal GDP continues at the current pace.

$60,000 gone….

Not to a scam.
Not to a bad investment.

A checkbox…..

A box checked without knowing what it meant.

We have helped many families with mistakes from DIY attempts at personal finance but this one really sticks with us

He left his job with roughly $300,000 in his 401(k) and thought handling the rollover would be simple.

But when the check showed up, it was for $240,000.

He called us frantic because $60,000 was missing.

We helped him figure out what happened ….

It turns out the culprit was a checkbox.

He chose an indirect rollover rather than a direct rollover, so his former employer’s retirement plan withheld 20% for federal income taxes because the distribution was paid to him rather than directly to another retirement account.

If the 401k had been done as a direct rollover → institution to institution ← the full amount would have been transferred.

When you are leaving a job, you are often focused on the excitement about what’s next.

Not the details of the paperwork … and that’s when mistakes can happen.

What if success isn’t measured by how much you have…
but by how much of your life you actually get to enJOY?

For a long time, the American Dream meant .....Bigger.... Better.... More....

More money.
More things.
More proof that you were “making it.”

But maybe the dream is changing.

Maybe success looks like having more control over your time.

More freedom to choose how you work.
More moments with the people you love.

And enough financial security to stop constantly chasing the next thing.

Because at some point more stops being the goal.
The goal becomes building a life that already feels like enough.

Has your definition of the American Dream changed?

Larry Sprung, founder and wealth advisor of Hauppauge, N.Y.- based Mitlin Financial, Inc.® acknowledges that he took a circuitous route to independence and RIA, but it’s one that he wouldn’t change.

“I had a very windy path,” he told InvestmentNews, explaining that he went independent in 2004.

Prior to 2004, Sprung had already racked up a lot of experience in the financial industry, and had also seen a lot of M&A.

He worked as a financial consultant at wirehouse Salomon Smith Barney for three years early in his career, before being hired by Quick & Riley, which was then bought by Fleet Bank, which eventually became part of Bank of America. BofA’s brokerage business ultimately became part of wirehouse Merrill Lynch.

“I left as Bank of America was transitioning to Merrill,” Sprung said, explaining that he opted to go independent and founded Mitlin Financial in 2004.

The company is named after Mitchell, his wife’s grandfather, and Linda, Lawrence D Sprung's mother, who inspired his career in financial advice.
