After the large amount of snow dumped on Long Island yesterday, we want to remind residents to take a few important safety precautions to protect your home and your family.
• Clear all exterior vents including dryer vents, furnace vents, and fireplace exhausts. Blocked vents can cause dangerous carbon monoxide to build up inside your home.
• Make sure furnace and heating system exhaust pipes remain clear of snow and ice.
• Check that your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working properly and have fresh batteries.
• Clear fire hydrants near your home. In an emergency, quick access to hydrants can save valuable time and lives.
• Clear pathways to your doors and around your home in case emergency responders need access.
• If using a generator, operate it outside only and keep it far away from windows and doors. Never use generators inside your home or garage.
• Shovel safely. Take frequent breaks, use proper lifting techniques, and avoid overexertion.
Thank you for doing your part to help keep our community safe.
