In November 2022, the Reimonenq family—Tony A. Reimonenq Jr., his wife, and their three sons—made headlines by closing a seven-figure real estate deal in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. They purchased a 20-unit strip mall in the Oak Grove community and transformed it into "Greenwood Plaza," a modern-day tribute to the historic Greenwood District in Tulsa, famously known as the original Black Wall Street.
The family’s vision is bold: to create a thriving hub for Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs, reflecting the economic empowerment that defined Greenwood in the early 20th century. Greenwood Plaza now provides affordable spaces for small businesses, including beauty salons, trade schools, insurance offices, and medical practices, fostering growth and self-sufficiency within the Black community.
Their journey wasn’t easy. The Reimonenq family faced multiple rejections from banks before finding creative financing solutions to make the deal a reality. Their determination places them among a small percentage of African Americans in Mississippi who have independently brokered a million-dollar real estate deal.
Beyond real estate, the Reimonenqs are deeply committed to community empowerment. Tony Jr. runs the Linked Up Empowerment Center, a nonprofit dedicated to equipping individuals with the skills and opportunities to succeed in business and life. He emphasizes that many people are eager to work hard but simply need a chance to thrive.
Through Greenwood Plaza, the Reimonenq family is not just building a commercial space—they are honoring the legacy of Black Wall Street by creating a sustainable ecosystem where Black entrepreneurs can flourish. Their work is revitalizing Hattiesburg and offering a powerful model of economic empowerment for communities across the nation.
