INDEPENDENT:
- works with multiple carriers at once
- works on your behalf not for the carriers
- can shop your coverage through multiple markets
- has multiple insurance company options
CAPTIVE:
- usually works with one primary carrier
- works for the insurance company/carrier
- can shop your coverage through one or limited markets
