Missed required minimum distributions (RMDs) are quietly costing retirees, and in some cases, signaling governance gaps for plan sponsors.
Recent research shows that nearly 7% of RMD-eligible participants failed to take their full RMD, leading to an estimated $1.7 billion in avoidable penalties. While participants bear responsibility, repeated missed RMDs often point to confusion around changing rules, having multiple retirement accounts, and unclear communication.
Plan sponsors may want to ask:
• Are RMD notices timely, clear and actionable?
• Are participants aware of first-year RMD timing and tax impacts?
• Are automated solutions being encouraged where appropriate?
Small improvements in education and communication can make a meaningful difference for both participants and fiduciary oversight.
