My family is definitely what drives me in my business, and I know many small business owners feel the same. It’s a big part of why I have chosen this path. I love having the opportunity to build personal relationships with my clients and know that my work is helping to benefit other people who, just like me, are working hard every day to support their families. It’s far more meaningful to me than working for a corporation where you feel like a number instead of a person. Even though I’m a “numbers” person, I recognize that family is everything!

How do you know if your books need to be cleaned up?

Some business owners prefer to do their own monthly bookkeeping, but you may need help with a clean-up if:

- you’re more than 3 months behind on reconciling your accounts and/or categorizing transactions

- you have a list of expenditures categorized as “ask my accountant”, but you’ve already forgotten what half the expenses were even for

- you’re still using the default chart of accounts rather than customizing it for your business

If you’re not looking for recurring monthly bookkeeping, but the list above sounds like you, a clean-up service can set you back on track!

Below are some of my recommendations to help keep your financial information organized!

First, keeping your own personal finances separated from your business accounts is SO important! You will waste time unnecessarily going through your records and trying to separate your personal expenses, but more importantly, you could be putting your personal assets at risk by commingling your finances.

Second, keep records digital whenever possible. Online banking makes this one super easy most of the time! Keeping physical, paper receipts and invoices is a clunky way to save information, and will cause much more stress.

Third, create a system that works for you so that you can keep track of your bills and payments. Unpaid bills means late fees and additional expenses that can be avoided with proper organization.

And finally, set aside a specific time every week to sit down and go through your finances. If you commit to doing this, mistakes are less likely to go unnoticed and you will be able to make informed decisions in a timely manner. This is essential for the health of your business!

Whether you are working with a bookkeeper or managing your own books, following these tips will help you stay on top of things and make your life easier in the long run!

One common mistake people make with DIY bookkeeping is NOT reconciling their accounts. Many people skip this step as a way to save time, assuming it is unnecessary. But reconciling your accounts really is an essential step if you want to be absolutely certain that no transactions were missed, nothing was entered twice by mistake, and the numbers on your reports are going to be accurate. It’s also one of the services I provide for EVERY single monthly client!

Since this is a new page, I figured I should introduce myself for those who don’t know me. My name is Briana Crowell, the owner and bookkeeper at ASB. I’m a graduate of Western Michigan University, where I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and then pivoted, going back a few years later to earn a Master’s degree in accounting. During that time I worked an internship preparing taxes for a semester. After graduation, I immediately accepted a position as a staff accountant with a family owned CPA firm in southwest Michigan, where I worked for about 6 months.

Pictured below is my beautiful family. They are the center of my world, and the reason I chose to leave a promising career in public accounting. As much as I loved my work, I knew that my babies needed me home with them in the first years of their lives. I have been home full time for about 3 years now, and could not imagine having missed out on so many important moments with my children. I love being home with them. But… I also want to work! Thus the idea for Accountable Solutions Bookkeeping was born.

I love the idea of being able to use my knowledge and skills to help other small businesses. To help other parents, or husbands/wives, be better able to run their businesses so that they can provide for their families too. I love being able to take some of the workload and stress off the shoulders of other business owners, so that they too have more time to spend with the people they love. Because otherwise, what’s the point of working so hard? We deserve to enjoy the fruits of our labor, too. You deserve that!

If that’s not a great reason to invest in a professional bookkeeper, I don’t know what is!
