In a highly anticipated move, the Federal Reserve has cut interest rates by 0.5 points, in response to evolving economic conditions. This decision, aimed at stimulating growth and counteracting slowing inflation, marks a strategic shift in monetary policy as the central bank seeks to ensure sustained economic stability.

Stifel Chief Economist Dr. Lindsay Piegza states, "The Committee, furthermore, anticipates an additional 50bps of cuts by year-end and a further 100bps in cuts in 2025. The Committee also lowered the IORB and the discount rate 50bps 4.90% to 5.00%, respectively."

Yesterday, the threat became a reality as the far-right leader Marine Le Pen joined forces with a left-wing coalition to topple the French government. According to reports, a majority of lawmakers in the National Assembly backed a no-confidence vote called yesterday afternoon against Prime Minister Michel Barnier's three-month-old administration, marking the shortest tenure for a premier since France's Fifth Republic was founded in 1958.

While the messaging surrounding the future of monetary policy has been somewhat mixed, it's clear the Fed is taking a more cautious approach to policy as inflation remains stubbornly elevated amid a "remarkably good" economy. While the Fed may still opt to move forward with a third-round cut in December, any further indications of strength or "surprises" in the data, particularly the inflation data, will offer a growing level of support for a pause in policy adjustments sooner than later.

Will the Elections Affect the market? Over time, we've seen that markets have been non-partisan. While elections often bring heightened emotions and create short-term volatility, history shows that markets have been ultimately influenced by economic fundamentals like corporate earnings, interest rates, and global trends – not political outcomes.

Historical data shows that, over the long term, markets tend to grow regardless of which party holds office. This reiterates the importance of staying disciplined and investing for the future, beyond election cycles.
