If you want to make real progress on debt, start by putting everything on paper — or in a simple spreadsheet. List each balance, interest rate, minimum payment, and due date.

Seeing the full picture may feel overwhelming at first, but clarity removes uncertainty. When you know exactly what you owe, you can choose a strategy with confidence — whether that’s focusing on the highest interest rate or knocking out the smallest balance first.

Awareness creates momentum. A clear plan turns stress into action — and action moves you forward.

You can even use our FREE Home Budget Calculator to get started: www.fnbmcalester.com/calculator/home-budget

If you’re job hunting — or know someone who is — be aware: employment scams are becoming more sophisticated.

Some scammers go through fake interviews and create legitimate-looking job offers to collect personal information like your Social Security number or banking details. Others move quickly, promising “easy” or guaranteed income if you purchase a program, training, or equipment.

Here are common red flags to watch for:
🚩 You’re asked to pay upfront fees for training or supplies
🚩 You receive a large check and are told to send the “extra” back
🚩 You’re hired to complete simple online “tasks” and told to deposit money to unlock higher earnings
🚩 The job involves receiving and forwarding money or packages (money mule/reshipping mule schemes)

The FTC has reported a sharp rise in “task scams,” where victims are allowed to withdraw small amounts at first — but must deposit money to continue earning. Once they do, the funds are gone. Remember: legitimate employers will not ask you to pay to work, send money back, or move funds between accounts.

If something feels too good to be true — it probably is. 👉 Stop. Think. Verify.

AI tools can generate realistic emails, fake websites, cloned voices, and even deepfake videos — making it harder to tell what’s real and what’s not.

Here’s how criminals are using AI:
🤖 More convincing phishing emails & texts that sound natural and professional
🖼 AI-generated images for fake websites, IDs, or social media profiles
🎥 Deepfake videos promoting fake investments or impersonating trusted figures
📞 Cloned voices that sound like your family member, boss, or even your bank

Because AI can mimic real voices, faces, and writing styles, scams may look more legitimate than ever before. If someone pressures you to act immediately, send money, share codes, or keep a situation secret — that’s a red flag. 👉 Stop. Think. Verify.

If something feels suspicious, contact FNB directly using a trusted phone number before taking action.

If you’re working toward debt freedom, choose a strategy that motivates you.

✔ Snowball method: Pay smallest balances first for quick wins
✔ Avalanche method: Pay highest interest first to save money
✔ Debt consolidation: Combine multiple debts into a single, usually lower-interest monthly payment: www.fnbmcalester.com/calculator/consolidate

Graduation season is exciting — and scammers know it. Young adults and recent grads are often targeted with fake job offers, scholarship scams, internship “opportunities,” and promises of fast or easy money.

These scams may look professional and convincing. Fraudsters often:
🚩 Send offer letters without an interview
🚩 Ask for upfront fees for “training” or equipment
🚩 Request banking information for “direct deposit” right away
🚩 Send a fake check and ask you to send money back

Remember: legitimate employers will not require payment to get hired, and you should never share sensitive banking details before verifying a company’s legitimacy.

If something feels rushed, too good to be true, or slightly off — pause.
👉 Stop. Think. Verify.

Research the company, contact them through an official website, and never send money or personal information without confirming it’s real.

Have a talent or hobby you could turn into extra income? Whether it’s tutoring, photography, baking, crafting, lawn care, graphic design, consulting, or selling handmade goods — even a small side income can make a meaningful impact on your financial goals.

Extra income can help you:
✔ Build your emergency fund faster
✔ Pay down debt more aggressively
✔ Boost retirement contributions
✔ Save for travel, a home, or a major milestone

The goal isn’t to overwhelm yourself — it’s to use what you already enjoy or do well to create opportunity. Even a few hundred extra dollars a month can accelerate progress and reduce financial stress.

Diversifying income streams builds financial resilience and gives you more control over your future. Small steps today can create powerful momentum tomorrow.

⚠️ Fraud Friday Reminder ⚠️

Scammers often pretend to be trusted companies — your bank, a delivery service, a utility provider, or even a streaming subscription — and claim there’s a problem with your account. They may say your payment failed, your account is locked, or suspicious activity has been detected.

These messages are designed to create urgency so you react quickly without thinking.

Common tactics include:
🚩 Emails or texts with urgent subject lines
🚩 Links asking you to “verify” login information
🚩 Requests for one-time passcodes or personal details
🚩 Threats of account suspension if you don’t act immediately
If something feels urgent, unexpected, or slightly off — pause.

Don’t click links. Don’t share information. Don’t rush.
Instead, contact the company directly using a trusted phone number or official website. 👉 Stop. Think. Verify.

👉"The thing I enjoyed the most was being able to extend credit to people to start their own business, and for them to become successful.”

~~

In August of 1966, Ken Bass walked into First National Bank & Trust Co. and started his career as a teller at our drive-in window. Sixty years later, we're honoring a lifetime of service, leadership, and genuine community banking.

Over six decades, Ken worked his way up from teller to the note department to lending - helping finance everything from a local paint and body shop to some of the first cable TV systems in rural southeast Oklahoma. In 1996, after 30 years with FNB, he acquired Wilburton State Bank and ran it for 20 years before returning to serve on our board.

When we asked Ken what he loved most about banking, he didn't talk about deals or balance sheets. He talked about people - “The thing I enjoyed the most was being able to extend credit to people to start their own business, and for them to become successful."

This is the heart of community banking, and the legacy Ken leaves with us.

Thank you, Ken, for 60 years of community banking the right way. 🏦💙
