Tip Tuesday: Stay Safe on the Ice this Winter ❄️
Winter fun like ice fishing, skating, and hockey can be a blast, but safety always comes first! Whether you're heading out to a frozen lake or river, keep these ice safety tips in mind:
❄️ Ice Thickness Guidelines
4 inches for foot traffic
5+ inches for heavier activities
Test the ice every 150 feet – ice thickness isn’t always uniform!
🧊 On the Ice: Key Safety Tips
Dress warmly: Wear water-resistant layers and traction-boosting boots.
Use the buddy system: Never venture out alone; keep a safe distance from others.
Bring tools: Ice picks, rope, and a life jacket could save your life.
🚫 What to Avoid
Snow-covered ice (it’s weaker!)
Alcohol (it lowers reflexes and body temperature).
Parking vehicles on the ice – keep them on solid ground.
If You Fall In:
Stay calm and conserve energy.
Use ice picks or your hands to pull yourself out.
Crawl or roll away from the hole to distribute your weight evenly.
Enjoy winter recreation responsibly and make safety your top priority!
