The FSP of Connecticut is proud to announce our own Elvin Turner has been honored with the Ken Black Leadership Award!
Elvin D. Turner, JD, MBA, is the 2020 recipient of the prestigious Kenneth Black Jr. Leadership Award presented by the Society of Financial Service Professionals (FSP). The award, named in recognition of the 1959-2001 editor of the Journal of Financial Service Professionals, is presented annually to an individual who embodies FSP’s core values of relationships, education, and ethics and demonstrates exemplary leadership qualities.
Turner, who served as FSP’s 91st and first Black president in 2018-19, heads up Turner Consulting LLC, in Bloomfield, CT, an entrepreneurial practice that seeks to empower financial advisors to build trusting relationships with their clients. Turner is also founder and president of Take Charge Total Wellness, a nonprofit entity designed to provide quality advice on health, personal finance, and retirement planning to underserved communities.
In announcing the award at ceremonies held both virtually and in person at the Apostolic Fellowship Church in Bloomfield, CT, FSP president, Mike McGlothlin, cited Turner’s compassionate, progressive, and inspirational leadership. McGlothlin stated that, “Mr. Turner used his impressive leadership qualities to help FSP think differently and focus on how our 90-year-old organization could do more to give back.”
In further supporting Turner’s selection for this award, McGlothlin stated, “Elvin Turner’s altruistic heart inspired the creation of the Achieving Financial Security outreach initiative. With this pro bono project, Elvin connected the expertise of FSP’s multidisciplinary financial practitioners with underserved communities to enhance financial literacy—competently and ethically.
Also speaking in recognition of Turner was Bishop Michael Geddis, pastor of the Apostolic Fellowship Church. Bishop Geddis shared his personal reflections on Turner, noting that Elvin is man of wisdom and integrity, a bastion of strength with a big heart for helping people. “To render service is his greatest joy,” stated Geddis.
“If he can help you, he will help. He equips you to be successful.”
In congratulating Turner on this honor, Society of FSP CEO David M. Maola, remarked, “Elvin’s patient strategic thinking and inspirational leadership have been critical to furthering the Society of FSP’s core values of education, ethics, and relationships. We are grateful for this opportunity to recognize and celebrate his service.”
