🍎 Fall Childcare Enrollment Is Still Open! 🍎

Looking for childcare and preschool services for your child this fall? The Laboratory School at CT State Capital has openings for children ages 3–5!

Our NAEYC-accredited program provides a safe, nurturing environment where children learn, grow, build confidence, and develop important social, emotional, and academic skills. With experienced early childhood professionals and a family-centered approach, we create a welcoming environment where every child can thrive.

📍 Location: Talcott Street level of CT State Capital
🗓️ Hours: Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

💙 Children of CT State Capital students, faculty, and staff receive priority enrollment, and community families are welcome!

💰 Tuition: $3.50/hour for students; $5/hour for faculty/staff and community families. Care 4 Kids is accepted, and eligible students may qualify for partial scholarships.

We’re thrilled to announce our 4th Annual Herencias Latinas Keynote Event, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month!

Presented by Capital Foundation, this year’s event, “From Survival to Strength,” will feature bestselling, award-winning author Jaquira Díaz, author of Ordinary Girls and This Is the Only Kingdom.

Díaz is the author of Ordinary Girls, a powerful memoir of her girlhood in Puerto Rico and Miami Beach that won a Whiting Award and a Florida Book Award, and was named among the year’s must-read books by O, The Oprah Magazine and Time.

Díaz’s work explores family, identity, resilience, and coming of age through the lens of her experiences growing up in Puerto Rico and Miami Beach.

Join us for an inspiring evening as Jaquira Díaz shares her powerful perspective on resilience, identity, community, and the journeys that shape us.

Welcome back, Capital! Thursday kicked off our fall semester, and the energy was everywhere. New students finding their first classroom, returning students picking up right where they left off, and a Welcome Back table that turned the 1st floor into a game room. Mini bowling, hoops, golf, prizes, snacks. All of it.

The good news is that it's not over. The Welcome Back table is open 8am to 6pm through Wednesday, September 2nd on the 1st floor. Stop by, play a game, win a prize, grab a snack.

Whether this is your first semester or your last, you belong here. Here's to a great fall.

We're proud to spotlight Dean Jason Scappaticci, who will be interviewing acclaimed historian Fergus Bordewich this month at the Mark Twain House & Museum.

Their conversation will center on Bordewich's latest book, exploring the 1876 Centennial Exhibition and the pivotal moment in American history it captured.

Dean Scappaticci has been in higher education since 2003, dedicating his career to supporting students at CT State Manchester (formerly Manchester Community College) and now here at CT State Capital. Outside the campus, he's also known around Hartford as "The Bowtie Historian," giving public lectures on topics ranging from Hartford's architectural history to America's Gilded Age. We're proud to see him bring that same passion for history and education into the community.

This event is hosted by one of our valued community partners, the Mark Twain House & Museum, and is free and open to all CT State students, staff, and faculty.

Meet "The Bowtie Historian" 🎩📚

Dean Jason Scappaticci is sitting down with acclaimed historian Fergus Bordewich to talk about his new book on the 1876 Centennial Exhibition; A pivotal moment in American history.

CT State Capital was proud to attend the Greater Hartford Alliance of Black Social Workers Juneteenth Scholarship Breakfast, where Dr. Sharale Mathis, President of Capital and Tunxis, served as the guest speaker. Faculty and staff from CT State Capital joined community leaders, advocates, and supporters in celebrating this meaningful occasion.

The event highlighted educational achievement, community leadership, and the ongoing pursuit of opportunity through scholarship and service. We are grateful to the Greater Hartford Alliance of Black Social Workers for bringing the community together in recognition of Juneteenth and its enduring significance.

Juneteenth is more than a holiday. It is a testament to freedom, resilience, and the enduring power of community.

As an institution rooted in Hartford and built on the promise of access and opportunity for all, we honor the generations who fought, and continue to fight, for the right to learn, grow, and thrive. Their legacy lives in this city and in every student who walks through our doors.

🌈 Happy Pride Month from CT State Capital! 🌈

This month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and reaffirm our commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment where everyone belongs.

Looking for ways to celebrate locally? Downtown Hartford is hosting several events throughout June, across the street from campus, including:

• Hartford Taste Festival (June 5–7) on Pratt and Trumbull Streets, featuring food, music, art, and community activities.

• Capital City Pride (June 13), just steps from our campus, with Pride on Pratt, a family-friendly street fair on Pratt Street, followed by PrideFEST at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza and an evening afterparty.

• Salsa Social on Pratt Street (June 26), bringing live music, dancing, and community engagement to downtown Hartford.

As a campus located in the heart of Hartford, we're proud to celebrate Pride alongside our students, employees, and neighbors.
