Stay vigilant!
Fraudsters know that many seniors tend to trust official-looking mail, so more people are now finding fake “new” plastic Medicare cards in their mailboxes. These cards are designed to appear legitimate—laminated, glossy, and sometimes even featuring fake holograms—but they are not genuine. Medicare does not issue plastic cards, and there is no program that requires you to “activate” a new card by providing your Social Security number. Falling for this scam can lead to identity theft, fraudulent medical charges, and serious long-term financial harm. If you receive a scam like this in the mail, throw it away immediately.

Medicare Myth #2: Medicare pays for long-term care!

That would be nice... Many seniors are shocked to find out that Medicare is NOT going to pay for their golden years in a retirement home or assisted living facility. Medicare covers the first 20 days in a skilled rehabilitation facility after a 3 day hospital stay. (Some Medicare Advantage Plans waive this requirement). For 2025, days 21 through 100 are no longer fully paid and require a copay of $209.50 per day. That is UNLESS you have a Medicare Supplement plan that covers this for you. Myth #3 next week!

Medicare Myth #1: I can enroll anytime I want to!

If only it were that easy.. While there are large windows of opportunity, if you miss them, you'll hit a wall. First time enrollees have 3 months both before and after their 65th birthday for their initial enrollment period (IEP). The annual enrollment period (AEP) is October 15 through December 7, when you can make certain changes to your Medicare coverage for a January enrollment. Myth #2 coming next week!
