Did you know that Medicare Part A doesn't use a standard "calendar year" deductible?
Instead, inpatient hospital stays operate on a system called Benefit Periods. In 2026, the Part A deductible is $1,736 per benefit period.
A benefit period begins the day you are admitted and ends once you have been out of the hospital or skilled nursing facility for 60 days in a row. If you are admitted in June, pay the $1,736, and are discharged—but then have to return in September—you could face a second $1,736 deductible! A quality Medigap or Medicare Advantage plan is essential to shield you from these repeating costs.
