A policy can lapse if a payment gets missed. Not exactly shocking. What is a little surprising: carriers are required to give a specific notice before that happens.

The catch is that notice can easily get buried in a busy mailbox or lost in a crowded inbox, especially during a hectic season. Which means losing coverage isn't always dramatic. Sometimes it's just one missed piece of mail.

You know how the football schedule comes out weeks before the season actually kicks off? You already know who's playing who and when, way before the first snap. It lets you actually plan instead of scrambling once game day shows up.

Medicare works kind of the same way this year, just with different dates.

Everyone thinks October 15 is when Medicare season starts. That's actually enrollment day, the day you can start making changes. The real numbers, the actual 2027 plan costs and details, get released by CMS in mid-to-late September. Weeks earlier.

That gap matters!

If you wait until October 15 to start paying attention, you're already behind, scrambling to review everything in the short window you have left. If you know the schedule ahead of time, you get to actually plan.

So consider this your schedule release. The real information starts showing up this month, not next.

Group benefits regulations update more often than most business owners track closely, and that creates a quiet but real risk: a plan design that was fully compliant a few years ago isn't automatically compliant today, even if nothing about the plan itself has changed.

Consistency feels like stability. In this context, it can actually be a blind spot.

The businesses most exposed to this risk aren't the ones making dramatic changes. They're the ones running the exact same plan structure they set up years ago, without revisiting whether the regulatory landscape around that structure has shifted in the meantime.

This doesn't require an overhaul. It requires a periodic check-in, ideally annual, to confirm the plan design still holds up against current requirements.

If your plan hasn't been reviewed against current regulations in the last year or two, that's a worthwhile use of an hour this quarter, before renewal season makes it a more urgent conversation.

If you've ever tried to understand Medicare and ended up with 17 browser tabs open, your Dr Pepper sitting next to you, and somehow even more questions than when you started... you're not alone. 😂

Seriously.

One minute you're reading about Parts A, B, C, and D.

The next minute you're trying to figure out if Original Medicare is the same thing as Medicare Advantage, why every commercial suddenly knows your name, and whether you should actually keep all that mail that's showing up in your mailbox.

Then your kid reminds you it's time to leave for volleyball practice, and you've completely forgotten what you were trying to figure out in the first place.

It's a lot.

The good news? Almost everyone feels that way the first time they go through it.

You don't have to have all the answers before you ask for help. In fact, asking questions is one of the smartest things you can do.

Nobody warned me that back to school night would require this much energy.

I walked in expecting a quick meet-the-teacher, grab a syllabus, be home in thirty minutes situation. Instead I spent an hour folded into a chair built for a nine year old, listening to the classroom schedule get explained four separate times because four separate parents kept walking in late and asking the same question.

I made eye contact with another exhausted parent across the room and we had a full silent conversation about our life choices.

Nobody tells you that back to school night is basically a full contact sport disguised as a calm evening event. You leave more tired than when you showed up, somehow having learned everything and also nothing, clutching a syllabus you will absolutely not look at again until October.

And yet. There's something kind of nice about it too. New year, new teacher, that specific hopeful energy in the room even when the chairs are actively hurting you.

What's one thing you wish came with an instruction manual once you became an adult?

Nobody warned me about taxes or figuring out what a deductible actually is. One day you're just supposed to know it. There's no ceremony. No manual. Just a Tuesday where you're suddenly responsible for it.

Meanwhile I'm over here still googling how to get a red wine stain out of a white couch cushion, so we're all just winging it together.

Adulting 101 should honestly be a required class. Insurance, taxes, how to make a doctor's appointment without anxiety, all of it.

Think about everything that's changed since this time last year.

A new job, maybe a new title, definitely a different paycheck. A move. A baby, or one who's suddenly not a baby anymore. A marriage. A divorce. A parent who retired, or one who needed more help than they used to. A house you didn't own last August. A relationship that looks completely different than it did twelve months ago.

Now ask yourself this. Would your life insurance still match your life today?

Most policies get set up once, during a specific season of life, and then nobody touches them again for years. Meanwhile life keeps moving, keeps changing, keeps looking less and less like the version of you who originally filled out that paperwork.

It's not about assuming something's wrong. It's just worth a look every once in a while to make sure the coverage still reflects the life you're actually living now, not the one you were living when you signed up.

There are some insurance conversations I can finish in a few minutes. Final expense has never been one of them.

And I've made peace with that. This isn't a "here are your options, pick one" kind of conversation. It's someone telling me about their spouse, their kids, the way they want to be remembered, what they're afraid of leaving unfinished. That deserves actual time, not a rushed pitch between other appointments.

So I slow down. I let there be quiet moments. I let people cry if they need to, and I let them laugh too, because those conversations usually have both. I ask more questions than I answer, at least at first, because I want to understand the whole picture before I ever talk about a policy.

I think that's honestly why I got into this line of work at all. Not for the paperwork. For the moments when someone exhales because they finally feel understood instead of sold to.

Around here, that usually looks like keeping tissues on my desk, always. It's slow on purpose. It's supposed to be.
