Turning 65 soon and feeling unsure about Medicare? You’re definitely not alone. At Mayfield & Associates, we talk with many folks across the Gulf Coast who have the same questions — especially about when to enroll. Here are a few reminders to help you stay on track:

• Know your enrollment window. You have seven months to sign up: three months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month, and three months after. Enrolling early can help ensure your Medicare coverage begins right when you need it.

• Understand how to enroll. Some people are automatically enrolled in Original Medicare, but others need to take action. This usually comes down to whether you’re already receiving Social Security benefits.

• Don’t put it off. Delaying enrollment without qualifying coverage can lead to penalties and delayed start dates.

• Explore your other options. If you’re still working and covered under an employer plan, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Missing all enrollment windows can limit your options and increase costs, so it’s important to confirm your situation early.
