Hello fellow fans,
It is with great regret that we announce that Anime South 2015 is officially cancelled. The event will not take place this year. We apologize to our friends and partners in the fandom community that were looking forward to attending -- so were we!
For those of you that are wondering why we are cancelling, the short version of the answer is that we ran out of money, because conventions are really expensive.
The long version of the answer is that we raaaaaaaan ouuuuuuut of moooooooneeeeeey, beeeeccaaaaa-
OK, the longer answer for real: Anime South is not run by a giant corporation with a Scrooge McDuck vault full of money. It's run by a bunch of average anime fans of average financial means. If at-the-door ticket sales were good we might have broken even, but due to the fact that we were going to hold the event at a new venue, after a year's hiatus, with several new senior staff members, we couldn't be sure we would sell enough admissions at the door to to cover all of our costs. In a worst-case scenario, we couldn't even come close to covering the shortfall out of our own pockets.
Over the last few months we brought in a new, more experienced con chair and tried several different ways to raise enough money to close the gap, including trying to secure sponsorships, converting the convention to a staff co-op model and wishing really, really hard for more money. Sadly it turns out that the Convention Fairy and her magic sack of cash doesn't actually exist.
Since we weren't certain that we could fulfill our financial obligations to our partners, vendors, venue and guests, the decision was made by the con chair to pull the plug now rather than risk a ball-pit meltdown this winter. Ultimately we would rather have no event at all than have people show up and have a crappy, poor experience.
We hope you understand and again, we apologize.
Anime South is not dead. We hope to return in 2016.
Sincerely,
- The Anime South Staff
