🚨 The most expensive workers' comp mistake usually isn't an accident.

It's bad record-keeping.

I was talking with a client recently who was going through a workers' comp audit and was completely frustrated trying to pull together the information the insurance company needed.

The problem wasn't that he did anything wrong.�The problem was trying to recreate 12 months of payroll and job duties after the fact.

If your employees wear multiple hats, those details matter.
The difference between roofing, flooring, carpentry, electrical work, and other trades can affect how payroll is classified and how your policy is rated.

My advice?
Track it as you go.

A simple spreadsheet, notebook, or bookkeeping system can save you hours of headaches when audit time rolls around.

Workers' comp audits don't have to be painful. A little organization today can save a lot of frustration a year from now.

A lot of business owners hear “workers’ comp” and immediately think:
“That’s expensive.”
“I probably don’t need it.”
“My employees are covered under something else.”

But workers’ comp is one of the most misunderstood parts of insurance.

And honestly? Most people were never taught how it actually works.

That’s why I’m doing this series. Not to pressure anyone into buying a policy, but to help business owners understand their options, protect their employees, and avoid expensive surprises later.

Insurance is complicated enough.
It should at least be explained clearly.

A lot of small business owners avoid workers’ comp because they assume it’s too expensive.

But most people have never actually had someone explain what a workers’ comp policy does.

It’s not just coverage for an injury on the job.

Depending on the situation, it can help cover:

You know what shouldn’t feel impossible?
Getting your insurance agent on the phone.

I have been in the insurance world for 30+ years, and one thing I refuse to become is “press 1 for this… press 7 and leave a voicemail.” 😅

When people have questions about coverage, claims, price increases, or what their policy actually means… they want a real person.
Not a phone maze.

That’s why I’ve built my business around being available, answering the phone, and actually helping people understand what they’re paying for.

Because good insurance is important.
But having an agent who actually calls you back? That matters too.

Needed a few signatures… so I met him right at the job site.

That’s just how I’ve always done business.
