June is historically one of the busiest months for insurance claims.

Not because people are careless. Because everything picks up at once.

More driving. More miles. Teen drivers home and on the road all day. People towing boats and campers for the first time all year. Holiday weekends with more traffic than any other time. Severe weather season still going strong.

People ask me sometimes why I volunteer as a firefighter on top of running the agency.

Honest answer: because I can.

I grew up watching people in this community show up for each other. Not because they had to. Because it's what neighbors do.

The fire service is the clearest version of that I've ever been part of. When the call goes out, you go. It doesn't matter what else was on your schedule. You go, and you do the job, and you come home if you're lucky, and you're grateful.

It has made me better at this work. It's taught me what it actually looks like when someone's worst day arrives without warning. It's made me take seriously the conversations I have with families about being prepared — because I've seen what unprepared looks like from the other side.

Here's something I see more often than I'd like:

A family hits retirement — or gets close to it — and they're in great shape financially. Mortgage paid off. Kids grown. Finally some breathing room.

But their insurance still reflects the life they had 20 years ago.

The home policy that was written when the house had a mortgage may have been set up differently than it should be now. The vehicles may have changed. The stuff inside the home has changed. Their actual risk profile has changed.

Retirement is a transition — and transitions are exactly when coverage deserves a fresh look.

Memorial Day.

As a volunteer firefighter in this community, I've had a small glimpse of what it means to show up when things are hard.

The men and women we remember today gave everything. There's no comparison to make and I won't try.

What I will say is that service — real service, the kind that costs something — changes how you see your work and your neighbors and your community.

To everyone in Grinnell who served, and to the families who carry on without the people they lost: thank you. We don't say it enough.

Graduation weekend.

To everyone in Grinnell watching a kid cross a stage this coming weekend — congratulations. You did that.

And now comes the part nobody puts on the invitation:

Your graduate is stepping into a world where they're responsible for things that matter. A car. An apartment. A first paycheck. A life that's suddenly, genuinely theirs.

School's almost out.

Which means your teen is about to go from driving to school and back to driving all day, every day, all summer.

That's a significant jump in miles. In situations. In opportunities for something unexpected to happen.

Fifteen years.

Here's what nobody tells you when you start in this business:

The product is insurance. The job is trust.

Anybody can sell a policy. The hard part — the part that takes years — is learning how to have the conversations people don't want to have. How to help someone understand a risk they've been avoiding thinking about. How to sit with a family in a hard moment and actually be useful.

I'm still learning. But after 15 years in Grinnell, I understand why I do this in a way I couldn't have when I started.

It's not about the policies. It's about the people on the other side of them.

They have limits.

Not just coverage limits — liability limits. A ceiling on what they'll pay out if you're responsible for an accident, an injury, or damage that exceeds what your policy is designed to cover.

Most of the time those limits are never tested.

But in the moments they are — when a lawsuit arrives, when injuries are serious, when the numbers get large — the difference between having a gap and not having one is enormous.

Closing that gap is usually simpler and more affordable than people expect.
