Starting Oct. 1, unincorporated Jefferson Parish’s National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System rating will increase from a Class 5 to a Class 3, becoming the first CRS Class 3 in Louisiana, and joining one of only 11 Class 3s in the United States. This new rating will provide residents with a 35% discount on their flood insurance.

FEMA is working to offer installment payment plans for flood insurance policies through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). FEMA published a rule in November 2024 that removes regulatory barriers to this option. FEMA and NFIP insurers will provide more information as the installment plan becomes available.

In 2021, FEMA implemented Risk Rating 2.0, a new methodology for determining flood insurance premiums. While FEMA said the change would lower rates for some policyholders, many have seen their costs skyrocket.

Another round of funding for the Louisiana Fortify Homes Lottery Program is available.

The Louisiana Department of Insurance is overseeing the program, and eligible homeowners in the state’s coastal region can receive a grant of up to $10,000 to make their homes more resistant to hurricane force winds

“By creating a more resilient sector of the state, we're going to attract more insurance companies and that competition will help us reduce insurance rates for all homeowners.”
